By Pauline MacaraegThe new government’s public construction program is the most ambitious in decades President Rodrigo R. Duterte’s economic planners have been speaking for some time about bringing about a “golden age of infrastructure”. During an economic forum Tuesday, they provided a detailed program of how exactly to attain the ambitious goal. Based on the government’s Three-Year Rolling Infrastructure Program (TRIP) for 2018 to 2020, it looks like the new administration is poised to spend the most for infrastructure compared to any government since 1986. Indeed, the Php3.6 trillion the government plans to spend for public construction from 2018 to 2020 exceeds the combined infrastructure outlays of the past five administrations.
If the new administration achieves its targets, Filipinos may yet begin to see the solution to age-old problems arising from the lack of infrastructure, including road congestion in Metro Manila and other rapidly growing urban centers. Not surprisingly, almost two-thirds of the three-year infrastructure budget will go to transportation projects.
